It isn’t possible on all routers to set up a VPN connection. Usually you may find the router you get free from your ISP won’t have this option (or many others). It can be a bit tricky to set up so I would recommend this step to people confident in their technological abilities. Setting up a VPN connection through your router is fantastic time saver though. It negates the need to set up all machines on a network with a VPN connection.
If you want to set up a VPN connection through your router your best bets are to look for routers that have something like DD-WRT preinstalled. You can also flash routers that have support for these firmwares but a warning to this is that you can completely brick your router and render it useless.
DD-WRT supports PPTP and L2TP. It is worth noting though that if you set up a L2TP connection on your DD-WRT router. Uour IP will change but your traffic will not be encrypted, a very important fact.
